Thermal lamination is used to attach a layer of protective film to a paper or plastic substrate. This process uses heat to bond the layer. Such a process is typically used to protect printed surfaces – such as product labels – from damage in storage and transport, to make product packaging moisture-resistant, to prevent liquids or oils from leaking through. Traditional thermal lamination adheres much faster than ‘wet’ lamination because the adhesive takes much less time to dry.

Thermal lamination is done using a film coated with a sensitive adhesive that applies a clear plastic film to a substrate such as paper or cardboard using heat and pressure. The adhesive is applied to the film using a process called extrusion coating, and then when it is passed through a system of heated rollers, the adhesive melts when heated and adheres the film firmly to the substrate, creating a strong and protective and durable layer.

How do thermal lamination machines work?

Loading the Film:
The lamination film pre-coated with adhesive is loaded onto the lamination machine.

Heating:
The film and substrate are passed through a system that activates and melts the adhesive on the film.

Bonding:
The film and substrate bond to the substrate due to the pressure applied while passing through the rollers.

Cooling:
The adhesive is passed through the cooling rollers.

Sorting:
The laminated product is cut to the desired size if required.
